Wolfowitz forgets how many GIs he's killed
Asked how many American troops have died in Iraq,
the Pentagon's No. 2 civilian estimated the total was
about 500 - more than 222 soldiers short at the time.
Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz was asked
about the toll at a hearing of a House Appropriations
subcommittee. "ItĄ's approximately 500, of which -
I can get the exact numbers - approximately 350 are
combat deaths," he responded. Now, more than 800 have
died since the start of the Iraq war, and Pentagon
bureaucrats like him aren't even bothering to keep
count - after all it's not their kid, so why bother?
Besides, Bush's election campaign is more important.
Wolfowitz brings new meaning to what Tommy Franks, the former head of Central Command who was in charge of the Iraq war, said when asked about Iraqi casualties: "we don't do body counts." He wasn't kidding. Page 8--> |
