Bush said on September 12, 2002: "Right now, Iraq is expanding and improving facilities that were used for the production of biological weapons." On March 17, 2003: "Intelligence gathered by this and other governments leaves no doubt that the Iraq regime continues to possess and conceal some of the most lethal weapons ever devised."
Everyone in his administration lied about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction:
"Simply stated, there is no doubt that Saddam Hussein now has weapons of mass destruction." - Vice-President
Dick Cheney, August 26, 2002.
"We know that Saddam Hussein is determined to keep his weapons of mass destruction, is determined to make more." - Secretary of State Colin Powell.
"Well, there is no question that we have evidence and information that Iraq has weapons of mass destruction, biological and chemical particularly . . . all this will be made clear in the course of the operation, for whatever duration it takes." - Press Secretary Ari Fleischer, March 21, 2003.
"There is no doubt that the regime of Saddam Hussein possesses weapons of mass destruction. As this operation continues, those weapons will be identified, found, along with the people who have produced them and who guard them." - General Tommy Franks, March 22, 2003.
"We know where they are. They are in the area around Tikrit and Baghdad." - Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, March 30, 2003.
But as Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz later admitted in an interview with Vanity Fair magazine: "The truth is that for reasons that have a lot to do with the U.S. government bureaucracy we settled on the one issue that everyone could agree on, which was weapons of mass destruction." They "settled" on WMDs not because Iraq was a threat, or because it was the truth - but because they needed a way to scare Americans into supporting their war for oil and empire.
Because they lied, tens of thousands of Iraqis died. Hundreds of British and American troops were killed. Billions of dollars were spent bombing and invading Iraq. Bush lied again when he proclaimed victory – the war and the deaths go on and on.
When Bill Clinton lied about an affair, the Republicans in Congress raised hell and got him impeached. When Bush lied to get the country to go to war, they sang praises for him. And the Democratic Party did its part - voting to authorize Bush's use of force against Iraq.
The U.S. government had no right to invade Iraq, has no right to occupy Iraq, and the troops need to come home now!
