There is a lot of press coverage about the killing of unarmed civilians in Iraq, especially at checkpoints and during raids,
There have also been quotes from soldiers who feel like shit after it happens because they feel like they fucked up and did something unforgivable.
To keep sane, remember who is responsible for the deaths of these Iraqi civilians: the politicians who forced the invasion of Iraq and put you there.
The Bush administration, and the Democratic and Republican Parties in Congress, all demanded and supported this war. Never forget that.
Some will try to shift the blame for these massacres to the individual rank and file soldiers – which is complete and utter bullshit.
As Iraqis fight against the U.S. Occupation and for their national independence in this guerrilla war, the people who blame the troops simply don’t understand that you fear death can come from any direction at any minute.
As happened in Vietnam, you can’t tell who the “enemy” is because Iraqis want the U.S. out now. Your natural response when you believe you are under fire is to shoot anything that moves. Your response is inevitable, whether the ambush is real or not.
The murderers are the U.S. politicians who put you and keep you in that hopeless position, where only death is certain.
During the Vietnam War, soldiers who had been involved in wiping out unarmed civilians became some of the most ferocious opponents of that war, and organized other soldiers to stop fighting it.
The only way out is to get out now and come home. Traveling Soldier is dedicated to helping build the movement inside the armed forces and at home to make that happen.
